Art Event #6 - Tecolote Guitar Works
Date: February 12, 2008
Location: Tecolote Guitar Works store in San Diego, CA
Time: 12pm
Brief description:
Showcasing over 30 sculptural and graphic artists, Tecolote Guitar Works has ukelele-sized Mexican guitars on display for a few months. Each guitar is unique and decorated from its original form. I was one of the artists featured in the display with a mosaic-covered guitar that is reminiscent of the ocean floor, clear salty water, and sandy shore with the use of colored glass tiles.

What I like about his work:
I really like how Herring uses vivid, bright colors in his work. This particular photograph session was creative because dye was sprayed over the face, and left a colorful mark on the individual.

The photograph session:

What I like about Herrera:
I like how said that we perceive things through "memory, emotion, and desire."
What I like about his work:
I like that he doesn't stick to the usual composition of black-and-white photography. His pictures look like graphite drawings.
What surprised me about his work:
His work is very ambiguous, and I would find it difficult to keep a consistent style, when his film developing takes place under different temperature and chemical circumstances.

Art Event #4 - Indian Rock field trip
Date: February 4, 2008
Location: Indian Rock in Vista, CA
Local Indian tribe who lead the field trip talks: Luiseño Indians
Link: http://www.csusm.edu/indianrock/
Brief Description:
There were two classes that visited this sacred Indian Rock simultaneously on Monday, February 4th. During the field trip, native plant specialist Greg Rubin took us on a guided tour of the property. Rubin pointed out that the site was originally a oak woodland, featuring chapparal trees. Over the years, weeds were introduced by Eurasian settlement.
Plants located on the Indian Rock property:
- sugar bush
- lemonade berry
- greasewood (also called chamise) which is a hardwood with straight shafts
- toyon (has red berries at Christmastime)
- coastal live oak trees (these acorns were once used for flour and wewish with the Luiseño Indians)
- coyote brush (this bush is a pioneer bush, with features green tiny leaves and tall thin bare sticks)
- elderberry
- white sage (sacred plant in many tribes, used for blessings)
- California sage brush (used for modern medicine)
- royal pestamon (has glossy green leaves)
- bush mallow (colors: grey, pink, lavender)
- oak trees
- monkeyflower (red flowers)
- laurel summac (new leaves are reddish)
- batilla hot poppy (blooms are 10" across)
- bushroo (cirtus plant with small oranges)
- butelon (also called desert mallow, which has velvet leaves)
- lupines (pink flowers sting human skin)
- yucca
- soaproot
- sumac
- snapdragon
- wild cucumber (also called manroot)
- deer weed
My favorite plant (the red monkeyflower, in full bloom):

After studying the plants, the classes sat and listened to the history of the Indian Rock, and the ceremonial coming-of-age events that took place a few hundred years ago. Following that, Steve Friers, a rock art specialist from Riverside County, explained the pictographs along the southwestern side of the rock. He also described the possible dyes used in the pictographs (an iron composite), which have made the pictographs last through the centuries.

My favorite piece called "Chapter Zero":

Why I like the piece above:
The altered book is easy to open, once you read the simple directions. Once opened, the book contains pages of clear transparenct sheets and pieces of vellum (clearish-white paper), which are needed to submerge in water, in order to read the text. This book is inspiring to me because it's making me think of different papers to use in order to create my own altered book project!

- travel guide organized by cities that I've visited (and include historical or geographical non-changing facts)
- skateboarding-centered (featuring skateboarders, with interviews or stories, headshot photos, pictures or scans of gear)
- skateboarding and surfing-centered (featuring interviews or stories from riders of each sport)
- zoo animals (photo essay)
- things related to water (lakes, oceans, ponds, animals in water, plants in water, ice, clouds, snow, waterfalls, fountains, etc)

Art Event #3 - ISM Grand Opening
Date: January 26, 2008
Location: Koos Art Center in Long Beach, CA
Event title: ISM Community Gallery - Grand Opening Night
Link: http://www.ismcommunity.org/
Brief Description:
This event featured paintings, drawings, sculptures, and graphic painted art from over 100 artists from across North America. Most of the artists in the show were from Southern California, and each artist showcased up to 4 of their favorite pieces from the past few years of their work. I enjoyed this event because there was a hosted bar, free art magazines, a photo backdrop with a photographer on-hand, and there were lots of fun creative people all in one place admiring these awesome pieces of art.
Two of my favorite pieces (by the artist: Kelli Murray):
